Government Proclamations for International Mother Language Day
Two Canadian Provinces, the Province of British Columbia and the Province of Manitoba have officially proclaimed February 21st as International Mother Language Day.
The Proclamation for the Province of British Columbia was witnessed by the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of British Columbia, The Honourable Judith Guichon on February 4, 2015. The document contains a number of facts which are in support of the decision, such as the importance of the mother language for an individual's identity, the importance of language as a means of communication, the existance of linguistic diversity in the province, the statement of respect the recognition of International Mother Language Day provides, the imminent threat of losing languages, and the support of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the matter.
The Proclamation for the Province of Manitoba was issued by the Manitoba Minister of Multiculturalism and Literacy, Flor Marcelino. Her document mentions the memory of Bangladesh's Language Movement martyrs of 1952, the right of educational and scientific advancement through mother language, the connected loss of knowledge with the loss of languages, and the possibility to create unity through celebration of International Mother Language Day.
