Implementation of Mother Language Day in Canada

International Mother Language Day has been introduced to the Canadian Parliament for recognition by Mr. Matthew Kellway on February 5, 2014. The introduction has been made in form of a Private Member's Bill, Bill C-573, the International Mother Language Day Act.
The recognition of International Mother Language Day for all Canadian provinces could make a statement for the commitment to linguistic diversity and preservation. Canada is home of over 60 individual First Nations languages [Census 2011], and the trend of declining languages can also be seen in Canada. Statistics Canada found in a national household survey in 2011, that only 17.2% of the population with an aboriginal identity responded to be able to conduct a conversation in an Aboriginal language. Further Canada is home to languages spoken all over the world.
